Emancipation Park: City’s First Public Park About to Get Major Renovation

As part of yesterday’s Juneteeth Celebration city parks officials and neighborhood leaders from the Third Ward came together to also announce plans to renovation Emancipation Park. This 140 year-old community treasure was actually the first public park in the city of Houston, purchased for $800 by freed slaves. In order to undertake this effort the city is forging a public-private partnership with the Friends of Emancipation Park to raise funds for the improvements and renovations. (KTRK-13 News video below)
