May Day in Houston Means Getting Prepared

How to make a disaster supply kit (PDF)

The Houston Region is the kind of place where big ideas typically become larger-than-life realities. Throw any challenge our way and we meet it head on. But are we really ready for anything?

One of the keys to living a successful life is preparation. With this in mind, as the forth-largest city in the United States, Houston should be a leader in disaster preparedness. While our city and state officials take measures daily to ensure our safety, ultimately it will take a collaborative effort involving all of the citizens. To answer our call to leadership, the Houston Community Preparedness Collaborative will implement May Day Houston, a citywide event that embraces May 1st as our official preparedness day.

May Day Houston is an event designed to bring together all facets of the Houston region, from business to families, non-profits to government, large faith-based groups to individuals. The common theme tying all Houstonians together on May 1st will be actions to help prepare ourselves and others for disasters. The possibilities are almost limitless, and even the smallest action makes a difference. Families could start building their emergency supply kit. A neighborhood could attend a Houston Police Department PIP meeting on disaster preparedness. Faith-based groups could volunteer with a local non-profit that works in disaster services. Business could provide training to their employees on preparedness or offer specials on preparedness items. And the City of Houston will have activities from several of its departments, including Health and Human Services, the Houston Police Department, and the Houston Fire Department.

For more information on the groups and individuals already participating, or to find out how you can participate, visit www.maydayhouston.org. Because as a community, Houstonians can group together and be ready for anything!
