Mobilizing City Hall “For Good”:

Neighborhood Centers Takes Campaign to the Next Step

On the recent heels of Houston being listed as the most philanthropic city in the country, and one of our largest annual charitable fundraisers got kicked-off this week, now comes the next stage in Neighborhood Center’s For Good Campaign.

How do you change a community? A city? A nation? The world? Neighborhood Centers, Houston’s largest nonprofit, is setting out to do just that by asking a simple question: What are you doing for good?

No matter the answer — whether it’s something simple, like sharing knowledge with those younger than you, or a part of something larger, like creating a community garden — Neighborhood Centers wants everyone everywhere to do their part to build better, stronger, smarter, healthier, happier communities.

Tomorrow (Wednesday, February 27) Neighborhood Centers will join with Mayor Annise Parker and other leaders from across Houston at the Urban Harvest City Hall Farmers Market to celebrate the movement and inspire change for good.

“We want people to really think about what they can do to better the lives of those around them, and in turn start a wave of good deeds — an entire movement of people transforming communities for good,” said Angela Blanchard, Neighborhood Centers President and CEO.

For more than a hundred years, Neighborhood Centers has been working to bring out the best in communities by impacting education, infrastructure, economic opportunity, connection, housing and health. And now they’re working to inspire others to do the same.

Both Blanchard and the Mayor will address the crowd in a discussion on the commitments made that afternoon to volunteerism, community building and concern for others can impact Houston and beyond. The event will culminate with the unveiling of an interactive art display to be showcased for weeks to come in front of City Hall. Other similar displays will be featured at Discovery Green, City Centre and other prominent locations throughout the city. For specific event details, visit IamForGood.org.

Neighborhood Centers’ long-time partner Shell/Motiva, whose programs, projects, facilities and people have made a major impact in economic and social development around the world, will deploy dozens of volunteers around the Urban Harvest Farmer’s Market. The volunteers will share information about the For Good Movement with the public and Farmer’s Market vendors.

The For Good Movement mirrors Shell/Motiva’s commitment to inspire everyone, everywhere to build better, stronger, smarter, healthier and happier communities. The volunteers will encourage guests to participate in celebration activities including interaction with the two visual installations, filling out commitment cards on what they will do for good and gathering to hear Mayor Parker and other leaders including a representative from Shell/Motiva speak about the For Good Movement.

“This is a chance for all of Houston to come together and celebrate not only the good we have done, but the good we will do,” Parker said. “Now if you ask me, that’s not something that Houston needs, that’s something the whole world needs.”
