Houston’s “One Bin For All” Concept Rates in As a Leading Idea for Bloomberg’s Mayors Challenge

Last summer, Bloomberg Philanthropies, a charitable venture of the New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, launched a competition for American cities with innovative ideas to address larger national problems. And now Houston sits as one of it’s finalists.

Called the Mayors Challenge, the initiative seeks to celebrate the creative problem solving and incredible innovation that is happening in city halls from coast to coast. The five boldest ideas with the greatest potential for impact will win funding as well as national and local recognition. The top prize is $5 million, and the 4 runners up will each receive $1 million.

Houston’s entry into the competition is the One Bin for All concept. A revolutionary idea for residents to discard all materials in one bin, treating “trash” as valuable assets and dramatically increasing recycling using game changing technologies. (Video below)

By partnering with the Huffington Post, citizens from around the nation also have the opportunity to select the winners among the 20 finalists. Click the grid here to learn more about the 20 finalists and watch videos from each city Houston is competing against.
