Roughly 500,000 Houston-area students will return to class Monday. Some will be setting foot on brand new campuses, while others will notice new policies and programs implemented by their districts.
The Aldine school district is debuting a new high school, named Davis Senior High. Aldine students will also be allowed to carry cell phones on campus for the upcoming school year, a new policy meant to enhance student safety. Cell phones must be off and kept tucked away on campus during the day.
Aldine ISD is also requiring high school students to wear collared-style shirts, in any color, this year.
The Houston Independent School District, with about 200,000 students, will open four new school buildings: Carnegie Vanguard High School, Lockhart Elementary, Neff Elementary and the Billy Reagan K-8 Education Center, which will offer a two-way dual English and Spanish language program to its kindergarten class.
HISD will also launch its first Mandarin Chinese language immersion school.
Students riding the bus to school in Houston ISD may also have surveillance cameras watching them, with the new cameras added to hundreds of buses ushering kids to campus.
