Recent awareness-based social media campaigns, like Kony 2012 and the Houston launched anti-“pink slime” petition campaign of Bettina Elias Siegel, who blogs at The Lunch Tray, illustrate a real organizing potential for the internet. No matter your perceptions on these topics, its been quite evident that social media is proving itself as a new player in bringing attention and essential information on topics not already in our public discourse. Plus they are also playing a demonstrated role already in addressing our urgent disaster news and information needs. No doubt by the time we see another hurricane threaten Houston, we’ll be relying on Twitter as much as the traditional media and Dr Neil Frank.
