While much has been devoted this week to the Supreme Court again visiting affirmative action in a University of Texas case, the Department of Education is soon to introduce an initiative with the aid of such luminaries as Spike Lee to get more black male teachers into K-12 schools. Given a recognition that liberals and conservatives both have for the importance of role-models — and given that recent research shows a positive impact when black (and Hispanic) youth have teachers in their lives that resemble themselves — lets hope this idea does not hit the same controversial road-blocks in Washington.
