Today’s news coverage that the Houston Independent School District released $35 million in performance bonuses, a 18% decrease from last year, got our attention. All told more then 9000 teachers received some sort of bonus through the ASPIRE Grant program. This is on top of their regular salary which ranges between $44,987-66,182 for teachers with a Bachelors degree.
Highest earners were three teachers who were visited by Superintendent Grier and the media yesterday. While the program seems seems to offer some important incentives for teachers who put their passion and time into their work, it reminded us about a recent infographic we saw about global teacher salaries, time commitments, and class sizes. It begs the question if special incentive programs are sufficient alone to getting the job done.
