Public Relations Pros: Industry Uses Military Tactics, ‘Psy/Ops’ in Fracking Disputes (Fuel Fix & CNBC)

The oil industry should pull a page out of the military’s playbook and copy tactics for countering insurgents. At least, that’s the advice that was delivered to oil and gas company representatives at a conference in Houston last week.

In separate panels focused on media and public relations, presenters from Anadarko and Range Resources advised attendees to adopt military-style tactics for soothing concerns about hydraulic fracturing and other industry practices.

The advice was recorded by an environmental activist who directs Earthworks’ Oil and Gas Accountability Project and turned over the tapes to Fuel Fix. CNBC, who also received the tapes, has a full writeup of the unexpected advice — with excerpts of the audio — from Washington, D.C. correspondent Eamon Javers.
