Youth Speak to the United Nations:

Through Social Media They Vow To Be Heard

Monday, October 24th, is United Nations Day, the international observance of the creation of the important world body in 1945. And as we reported a back in August the Secretary General Ban Ki Moon issued a creative YouTube invite to a new crop of would-be Citizen Ambassadors. Using social media himself, he asked for 30-minute elevator pitch style videos on what he, and the world, should be doing to improve on our common future.

The call itself was notable for its creative edge, and many of those submitted were  too. Overall three were announced last week as winners, but we liked this video “pitch” by Sigin Ojulu of Sudan the best. The 20 year old, displaced by civil war and living in the US now, displays a remarkable strength and conviction as well as an acknowledgment of how the media is changing this world. Furthermore, she demands that she and her generation be heard, not just be allowed to talk. We think it’s inspiring.

Other winners can be seen at the Citizen Ambassador website.
