Due to cost burdens with other needs in the Sheriff’s office, Ed Gonzalez announced late Tuesday an intention to opt out of a voluntary program with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Program 287 allows ICE to work with local law enforcment in detaining illegal immigrants. While the decision is only impacting a voluntary program, the implications of the decision will likely put the Sheriff at odds with the Governor, who is already feuding with Travis County Sheriff citing the city as a ‘sanctuary city.’
