Several weeks back we featured stories on “food deserts” in Houston – poorer neighborhoods and regions with no grocery stories, and few (if any) options for affordable and healthy food. This weekend Channel 26 profiled the Joe V Smart Shop
grocery chain that just opened a new store in Acres Homes, and is bucking this worrisome trend using a novel business model. One that relies on fewer service perks and smaller diversity of product lines, yet which seems to offer a promising solution to the challenge.
