Recent national debate after the tragedies in Aurora and Newtown have focused on not only guns as a matter of public safety, but also on mental health care. Locally, police and sheriff’s deputies have been trying to tackle the mental health dimension proactively for several years now, through inter-agency based Crisis Intervention Response Teams that work on the streets. Now though they are calling on the state to support them more fully in expanding the idea, both for Houston and elsewhere.
