Galveston, the first city in the nation to embrace the City Commission form of government, as a result of the Great 1900 storm, may soon be on the cutting edge of addressing one of the more perplexing problems of modern urban poverty as a result of Hurricane Ike.
Spearheaded by mapping done by the Center to Eliminate Health Disparities at UTMB, officials will soon be considering plans for healthy living infrastructure as well as development solutions to address “food deserts.” Areas of the island devoid of grocery stores or affordable healthy food options for poor residents.
