Houston Bar Assn Offers Legal Help to Wildfire Victims

To those effected by wildfires around Houston, or elsewhere in Texas, numerous legal questions can arise as one deals with insurance companies, landlords, tenants, property records and documents, etc.

They have formally scheduled several opportunities for victims to seek informal advice over the phone as well other opportunities to get face-to-face advice from volunteer attorney’s in legal clinic settings:

  • September 21 LegalLine – The public can call 713-759-1133 between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and speak to volunteer attorneys who will answer their legal questions related to the recent wildfires, as well as general legal questions.
  • October 1 Legal Clinic – Volunteer attorneys will be available to meet with residents who have legal questions related to the wildfires at this Saturday clinic sponsored by the HBA’s Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program and the HBA’s Consumer Law Task Force. The clinic will run from 9:00 a.m. until noon at Ripley House, 4410 Navigation, Houston, TX 77011. No appointment is necessary; please bring any related documents.
  • Other opportunities to get aid – The HBA’s Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program has set up a disaster hotline and an email where those affected by the fires can email questions to [email protected] or call 713-225-9455 and leave a message, which will then be answered by a staff attorney or volunteer. The HBA is evaluating other legal needs that displaced persons may have in the future to determine services.

In addition to these opportunities to get advice, the Houston Bar Association is offering opportunities to work with them in helping the American Red Cross and firefighters. For more information, contact Scot Clinton at [email protected] or Angela Becnel at [email protected].
