The Red Cross today forwarded an update of their response to the Grimes County wild fires that drew national attention to our region last month.
As Grimes County residents work to rebuild their homes and lives after the devastating Dyer Mill wildfire last month, the Greater Houston Area Red Cross is completing its assistance to them.
More than 60 homes suffered major damage or were destroyed. The Red Cross has directly assisted more than 50 residents, either financially or through referrals and other services.
Red Cross Disaster Assistance provides immediate help for basic, emergency needs: shelter, food, clothing, bedding and prescription medicines, which many people lost in the fire.
Since hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes as the wildfire raged, the Red Cross fed and sheltered residents for five days at the Navasota High School. Grimes County residents and businesses were so supportive of their neighbors who were forced from their homes. Local restaurants provided food to the shelter, businesses donated bulk items such as water and other needed goods and people came to volunteer.
